Ankle Fracture

Is when one of the bones in the ankle is broken. The tibia, fibula and talus make up the ankle joint. This most commonly occurs after an injury. Sometimes when a patient suffers a very severe ankle sprain, the ankle can break as well. This is a very urgent situation and the patient should see a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis is made with a clinical exam and x rays. Sometimes a doctor will order an MRI to look at the ligaments and tendons to make sure those were not damaged as well.

Treatment ranges from casting, a walking boot to surgery depending on the severity of the fracture.
