This is when the bone grows in an area of high impact. Most commonly we see bone spurs on the heels. They often cause the patient to experience heel pain. Bone spurs can also occur on the inside or top of the foot as well. Sometimes the patient can feel the bone spur if the skin is thin in that particular area. They can cause irritation inside the shoes and/or difficulty in finding properly fitting shoes.
Diagnosis is through x rays and a clinical exam. Treatment can range from shoegear modifications to supportive inserts for the shoes. Sometimes surgery will be used to remove the painful bone spurs.
