Heel pain, also know as plantar fascitis is one of the most common foot complaints. Usually patients complain of pain in the heel first thing in the morning, or pain after rising from a seated position. Heel pain can also occur following trauma or with other arthridities such as rheumatoid arthritis. The causes of heel pain include, improper shoes, overuse, low arches, high arches or injury.
Diagnosis of heel pain (plantar fascitis) is with a thorough clinical exam and x rays. Treatment includes icing, stretching, inserts for the shoes, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections and sometimes a walking boot.
